It seems like the New Orleans Pelicans currently are the busiest team in the whole of NBA right now as they continue to rebuild their franchise back to becoming a contender.

After the recent blockbuster trade they were involved into, with star player and former number one overall draft pick Anthony Davis was shipped to the Los Angeles Lakers for three young promising players (Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart) plus three more draft picks (including the team’s 4th overall lottery in this year’s draft) the New Orleans Pelicans have made another significant move – retaining current head coach Alvin Gentry.

The team have picked up Gentry’s option until the 2020-2021 season which means he will be with the team for at least another two years.

This was announced by no other than newly-minted Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin:

We couldn’t be happier to extend our relationship with Alvin. He is exactly the right coach at the right time for this franchise. As I have mentioned several times previously, the shared vision we have for the future of Pelicans basketball both on and off the floor will enable us to build a roster that fits both culturally and tactically. Perhaps more importantly, the relationship we have built over our many years together will enable us to challenge, empower and further one another and our franchise”.

Alvin Gentry has been with the Pelicans for previous four seasons and has collected 145 wins and 183 losses for .402 winning percentage. He guided the team for a playoff run in the 2017-2018 season and reached the second round by sweeping the higher ranked team Portland Trailblazers but eventually falling into the hands of the Golden State Warriors in Five Games in the following round. They were also poised to pick Zion Williamson on Thursday as the number one overall draft pick.
